The Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors are set to square off in the Western Conference Finals of the 2018 NBA Playoffs, with Game 1 beginning tonight. Many believe that this anticipated series will not only determine which squad competes in the upcoming NBA Finals, but also goes on to win it. Given the opening championship odds for each of the four remaining teams—Golden State was installed as the favorite at -140 and Houston slightly behind at +250, while the Cleveland Cavaliers started at +500 and Boston Celtics at +2000, although those could soon shift after Boston shocked the world with a blowout Game 1 victory on Sunday—they could easily be correct. Barring an unexpected development, the winner of this series will go on to be massive chalk in the Finals against whichever team represents the East, making this arguably the most important seven-game showdown of the postseason.

Despite Houston winning the regular season series (two games to one) against this opponent—and posting seven more victories overall, earning the league’s No. 1 overall seed after a 65-17 campaign—the club still opened as underdogs in the Western Conference Finals. Golden State deserves the benefit of the doubt, however, after an injury-plagued season in which defending champs seemed to be on cruise control at times. After three straight Finals runs, winning two, the Dubs were installed as -185 favorites to make a fourth consecutive appearance in 2018. Houston is a +155 underdog, meaning backers would return $1.55 for every $1 wagered if it becomes the first team to eliminate Golden State in the West portion of the NBA Playoffs since the Los Angeles Clippers did back in 2014.
